Simple terms for a simple app.
These terms are an agreement between you and Retriever Labs Pty Ltd ("we", "us") for your use of the Kepto app on iPhone and Android. By downloading or using Kepto, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Using Kepto
- We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Kepto on devices you own or control, for your own personal use.
- Kepto is an on-device app. It has no accounts and no servers of ours; your data stays on your device, as described in our Privacy Policy.
- Please do not misuse the app, for example by trying to reverse engineer it, interfere with its security, or use it in a way that breaks the law.
Your content
Everything you put into Kepto, including receipts, photos, and vault documents, is yours. We never see it and we claim no rights over it. You are responsible for the content you store, and you agree to store only documents you are entitled to keep, and to use Kepto lawfully.
The Document Vault, and why we cannot recover it
The Document Vault stores your documents encrypted on your device with a key that lives only on that device and is never backed up. This is a deliberate privacy choice: not even we can read your vault.
Vault documents stay on the device that scanned them. Their labels and dates may sync or back up with the rest of your data, but the documents themselves never do, so they cannot be opened on your other devices.
It also means the vault cannot be recovered. If you lose, reset, erase, or replace your device, or delete the app, the documents in your vault are permanently gone, and neither you nor we can restore them. The vault is not a backup. Please keep your own separate copy of anything you cannot afford to lose. When you export a document to share or save it elsewhere, that exported copy is no longer protected by Kepto and is your responsibility.
App Lock
App Lock and the vault rely on your device's passcode, screen lock, or biometrics. If you forget your Kepto PIN on iPhone, you can unlock with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode instead. We cannot reset a PIN or unlock Kepto for you.
Sync and backups
iCloud Sync (iPhone) and Back up to Google (Android) are provided by Apple and Google under their own terms. We do not control them and cannot guarantee that they will always run or restore everything; for example, Google limits how much each app can back up. Keep a manual backup file of anything that matters to you.
Purchases
Kepto is free to use with limits (up to 25 receipts, a photo on the first 5, one vault document, and one tracked subscription). The optional one-time "Kepto+" unlock removes them; it is not a subscription. Purchases are processed by Apple's App Store or Google Play, and their terms and refund policies apply. We do not process or store your payment details.
No warranty
Kepto is provided "as is" and "as available". While we work hard to make it reliable, we do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will detect every warranty date or preserve every file. You use it at your own risk.
Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, Retriever Labs will not be liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of Kepto, including the loss of vault documents described above. Nothing in these terms excludes rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other laws that cannot be excluded.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If we do, we will move the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of Kepto after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia.
